Everywhere the Pisces fleet boats went this week, they found lots of hungry Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, or even a few Wahoo waiting for the bait (which always adds a refreshing touch). The water temperature has dipped as low as 75 to 77 degrees, and the air slipped slightly to between 66 and 78 degrees, creating near-comfortable conditions for a relaxing and memorable trip for the anglers who arrived from the snow and freezing weather.
However, the Cabo weather has been a dream for almost everyone arriving from destinations throughout most of the U.S. The wind, though a bit stronger at times, didn’t prevent the boats from going out or the fish from biting.
When Adam Stokes, Devin Manino, Greg Smith, Josh Rich, Nick Rossi, and Tyler Palazzolo stepped on the “BBII,” a37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, a unique bond formed between Captain Hector and Mate Joel and the Zeeland, Missouri group, united by their love of fishing. The crew ran to the Los Arcos, where their anglers caught and released FORTY-STRIPED MARLIN in the 100 to 120-pound range on mackerel. The day was one of the best they had ever experienced.
David Miller, Edgar Norris, Evan Helda, Logan Roberts, and Spencer Hamrick were thrilled to have been fishing in the right place at the right time. “HOT ROD,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, run by Captain Erick Orozco at the Helm and Mate Hot Rod Jose Ramiro Ramirez overseeing the cockpit, took their group from Charlotte, N.C., to the Los Arcos Spot, where they caught and released ELEVEN Striped Marlin weighing from 90 to 110 pounds on mackerel. They were thrilled to have such a day, with one fish after another coming in after the bait they dropped back or cast. They decided nothing was as exciting as watching the marlin’s tail slash back and forth through the water, seeking the bait.
Fishing alone, Gibbons Cornwell from Vaughn, Montana, decided to fish with Captain Rosendo Gomez and Mate Carlos Santos, running the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram. They found three 120-pound Striped Marlin that he caught and released and One big Wahoo weighing 43 pounds, all on mackerel at the La Brecha. He had hoped for a single marlin and was thrilled to have released three, plus the wahoo, a highly sought-after fish.
David R. Seaman, David Seaman, Reed Seaman, Seth Seaman, and Tommy Barton fishing on the “YAHOO,” a 42-foot Bertram, with Captain Ricardo Escamilla Yahoo at the helm and Mate Jose Escamilla Yahoo overseeing the cockpit hit the jackpot when they caught and released EIGHT 120-pound Striped Marlin on mackerel at the La Brecha. He enjoyed his day with the crew and walked on air when he left Yahoo.

Once the California anglers boarded the “CORONITA,” a 40-foot Cabo Express in high spirits with Captain Manuel R and Mate Manuel JR in charge, they took off for the Los Arcos Spot. The California anglers, Chris Schofield, Heather Browning, Kaleb Blackburn, Mellisa Schofield, and Tanner Martin, could tell from the moment they met the captain and mate that they would be in good hands, and they were correct. With delight, they fought fish after fish until the tally reached THIRTEEN Striped Marlin caught and released weighing between 80 and 130 pounds, all on mackerel.
Captain Abel and Mate Jose Luis on the “RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, had Everett Petronio, Peter Kenneth, Milton Randy, and John Pereschino aboard when the fishermen caught and released TWELVE 120-pound Striped Marlin on bait at the La Brecha. It was a fantastic day, although one of the anglers had met his match and determined that he might need a rest before they went out again! But by the end of the day, he declared that he would be ready. He was not to be left behind!
Mark Magouirk from Destin, Florida, experienced a day filled with variety and excitement. Chartering the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram, he caught and released NINE 120-pound-class Striped Marlin on sardina and charrita at the La Brecha Spot. Additionally, he caught Eight 4-pound Skipjack 37 miles on the way to the 210 Spot. The day was sunny and bright and perfect for fishing.
The fish Orville Peterson had highlighted on his list was a 100-pound tuna when he and his wife, Bonnie Peterson, left cold, snowy Grand Junction, Colorado, and climbed aboard the “LA BRISA,“ a 31-foot Bertram in Cabo with Captain Orlando M and Mate Jesus Winkler. When they were 37 miles at the 210 Spot, they began catching Tuna. They caught TEN Yellowfin Tuna from 6 to 108 pounds on multiple types of bait, so Orville reached his goal. In addition, they caught Eight Skipjack weighing 4 pounds in the same area. With a great sigh of relief, the Petersons packed their bags and returned home to Colorado, where Orville could shovel his driveway, dreaming of his 100+ pound yellowfin tuna and grateful to his captain and mate for fueling his winter dreams.
From Tucson, Arizona, Anthony Somohano and Matthew Frank chartered the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram, with Captain Orlando M and Mate Jesus Winkler, headed straight for the 240 Spot when they were stopped just short of the bank by the first of THIRTEEN Yellowfin Tuna that ranged from 8 to 122 pounds in weight. They also caught SIX 4-pound Bonito on mackerel, curry, and palo at that exact spot.
“LA CHINGONA 2,” a 64-foot Viking – Captain Tony B and Mate Miguel took their guest, solo angler Greg W. Smith from South Carolina, fishing for Yellowfin Tuna and Striped Marlin. Believing that the La Brecha Spot was their best area, they headed straight to that site. The skills of angler Greg W. Smith were immediately tested as he began catching and releasing the first of Ten Striped Marlin from 100 to 120 pounds and Two 35-pound Yellowfin Tuna on mackerel at the La Brecha Spot. Good going, Greg! What a day!
Travis Campbell chose the “KNOT WORKIN,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Tito Olascoaga and Mate Cesar as the platform to fish on Monday, and it was a good thing he did as he caught Three 50 to 88-pound Yellowfin Tuna on Mackerel and Curry 12 miles outside of del Cerro. He had a wonderful day of fishing and also enjoyed the crew.
Captain Julio Castro and Mate Tracy Ann Raul Leal are the skilled crew on the “TRACY ANN,“ a 31-foot Bertram, and have been running the boat for many years. When Dan Vicini and Mark Couvillion from Stockton, Alabama, suggested it would be nice to catch a large tuna, the Captain and Mate knew where to take them, and they headed for the 220 Spot. When they arrived, the anglers caught Three Yellowfin Tuna from 20 to 108 pounds on bait, 37 miles to the 220. They were delighted with their crew and their day!
From the time Heather Greenwald, Pamela Greenwald, and Wayne Greenwald stepped on the “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram, a unique bond was formed between the crew, Captain Beto Lira and Mate Gerardo Rodriguez, and the group, united by their love of fishing. The anglers caught and released Five Striped Marlin weighing 90 and 130 pounds on mackerel at the Lighthouse. The Grand Marais, Michigan, group was grateful they had the right crew!
The 30-foot Bertram, “KARINA,” with Captain Orlando Murillo and Mate Jorge Velez, had a great time with Heather Clay, Jon Fuller, Sherri Strom, and Troy Clay. They caught and released One 100-pound Striped Marlin and Three Yellowfin Tuna in the 20-pound range on bait at the San Jaime Bank. It was a beautiful, relaxing day on the water, and everyone enjoyed the day.
Robert Simon, a solo angler on the “ADRIANA,” a28-foot Uniflite for fishing with Captain Frank and Mate Arturo, who was running the show for the angler from Manchester, New Jersey, who caught and released Five 100-plus pound Striped Marlin on mackerel at the Los Arcos. It was quite a long day as Robert no sooner released one marlin and tried to rest until the clicker sounded on the reel, and he was fighting another. He was one tired hombre when he exited the boat that afternoon. Although he vowed he would not fish for another marlin, he was almost ready to charter a boat and try again by the following day.
The 30-foot Bertram, “KARINA,” with Captain Orlando Murillo and Mate Jorge Velez, had a great time with Heather Clay, Jon Fuller, Sherri Strom, and Troy Cla., fishermen from Roslyn Heights, New York, Christopher Sunde, Kendrick Reaves, and Nicholas Giuffrey, caught and released Five Striped Marlin in the 90-to-120-pound range on mackerel at the Los Arcos Spot. They were proud of the number of striped marlin they were able to catch and hoped they would be able to return another day and catch some different Sea of Cortez species!
The “VALERIE,” a 35-foot Bertram with Captain Salvador Flores and Mate Ulises G. where David McKinder, Don Swartz, and Jon Kantola from Michigan had remarkable success catching and releasing Eight Striped Marlin from 90 to 120 pounds on mackerel at the Los Arcos Bank. This was a significant number of fish for these anglers.
Joseph Kliegl chose the “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, and crew Captain Raul and Mate Marcelo D to fish with, and, luckily, they did. The fun-loving crew ran to the Los Arcos Spot, where they found the marlin for Joseph, and he caught and released Eight 120-pound Striped Marlin on mackerel at Los Arcos before the day was over. Being an excellent angler and having a first-rate crew, he couldn’t help but have a fantastic time!
The “BILL COLLECTOR II,“ a 35-foot Bertram with Captain Juan C. Lopez and Mate JC Martinez, continued to find tuna for a young couple from Lehi, Utah, enough to keep them busy for the day. Forrest Smith and Jessica Durgess caught Ten Yellowfin Tuna weighing 10 to 35 pounds on feathers, bait, and kite 33 miles to the 230 Spot. They had a wonderful time, and though they had enjoyed the day, it was also exhausting.
“SEA BUM,” a 34-footer with Captain Antonio and Mate Cesar, headed to the Los Arcos Bank where their Zeeland, Missouri group, Adam Stokes, Ceres Smith, David Manino, Nick Rossi, and Tyler Palazzolo, caught and released a 90-pound Striped Marlin that took a mackerel. They also released a 6-pound Roosterfish that also took the bait at the Cerros de Arenas. It was a fun day for everyone on the boat.
